Hey, a post a day! That’s cool. I guess it’s only two days… anyway…

I went to see the people that did the insulation for my house today. I was laying awake in bed the other night and kept thinking of the different ways I’d seen people do the insulation in their vehicles.

It has all been interesting to see, but I don’t know anything about insulation and just watching people stick fibreglass, wool, Styrofoam and Reflectix — left me wondering, how insulation actually works. I was getting sick of watching the same thing over and over again on YouTube as well, so I thought I should just go ask someone who does it for a living.

I’d seen a product called Foilboard. Many of the van build videos I’d watched mentioned, every bit of space is important and not to waste any. I’ve decided to waste some. I’m not stuffing the walls and roof with fibreglass or anything else. For insulating to work there need to be air space so the heat can travel then be reflected. Everyone seems to just jam their choice of insulation against the vehicle body and cover it up.

I am going to box in the entire space using 10mm sheets of Foilboard. The guy at the insulation place said to even use small standoffs where I mount the Foilboard to the ribs of the van so there is that air gap.

Over the top of the Foilboard my walls be also standoff a few millimetres. I’m going to cover the walls and ceiling in Thin plastic sheets made from Polyproylene. The company I found so far (after my first Google search was called Corex and they’re not too far away either. I think I can mount LED lighting in that gap between the Foilboard and the sheets of plastic too, so the entire roof will “glow” for lighting.
