Can’t remember if I mentioned it or not, but I’m trying to keep up with Jedd and his latest van rebuild at intothemystery13 on YouTube.

He’s probably way ahead. I’ve been able to spend a couple of hours at night after work to do what I can. Being clueless and not very handy don’t help.

I can’t seem to do anything “final”. Everything seems to be done in a rough way, with the mindset that I’ll just get it in good enough, then come back and clean it up later.

The floor went in. I thought I could to a better template. No.

Today I went to the flooring place near work and managed to get $250 of vinyl flooring for $30. First time I think I’ve actually managed to get something for less than than buying it new. That was lucky too, because again, I though I’d cut the floor in-place, instead of using the template. Well, I used the template for the rough size and all the YouTube videos I watched seeing people install vinyl flooring made it look easy to get a perfect finish. Not so much for me. It’s fine, just not laser sharp edges like in the movies.

Okay, so now I have. A layer of insulation on the floor of the van. I have Redtongue flooring to mount everything to. I have my floor. I have a fear of anything permanent, so instead of of drilling holes in the van. I’m going to try using the factory holes to bolt things to the walls and everything screw everything down into the 22mm floor.

What I have to do now. Is actually finalise all this floor stuff:

  • I’ve got two bolt holes in the floor that freaked me out because I need to work out what to do to make them rust proof, then I can reinstall the cargo barrier.
  • I need to pull the Redtongue flooring and insulation back out and drill the holes and match the holes in the floor for the cargo barrier to go back in.
  • Maybe wax? The edge of the Redtongue to make the edges a bit waterproof so they don’t expand if they get wet.
  • I need to attach the “red tongue” in the floor and join the two boards together.

I still haven’t finished deciding on the layout. I am closer though. I had all these ideas about beds and tables folding out. Then BAM last night while I was in bed not being able to sleep I found Matt and his van life — he has built a van with things that fold in and out similar to the concept I had in my head. It was really good to see something real.

My fridge hasn’t shipped yet. I think when that arrives I’ll be able to slide it around in different locations and see where/how big my “kitchen” area will be. I was hoping to have it at the back door to I could cook from inside the van, or standing outside with the rear door up.

Note to self: Pay more attention to where my laptop cable is when cutting in the floor and watching intothemystery13…
